Step 4 to Optimising for Profit & Cash: Numbers Target
This is Step 4 in the five-step Numbers methodology. If you have worked through the first three steps, you already know your numbers and understand what they are telling you. Now comes the step that turns that understanding into direction: setting meaningful targets.
So here is the question. You have mastered Step 1 (Numbers 101), Step 2 (Numbers Knowledge) and Step 3 (Numbers Strategy), but have you mastered your Numbers Targets? Are you actually setting a turnover goal and the financial KPIs that sit beneath it? Or are you running your business on instinct and hoping the bank balance holds?
What Numbers Targets really means
Numbers Targets is about giving your business goal posts. Two principles sit at the heart of it:
Setting a turnover goal.
Setting the other key financial KPIs that support it.
Once those are in place, you are ready to do the part that counts: measure, monitor and take action.
The cost of skipping this step
Without targets, you are not optimising your business for profit and cash. The result is quiet leakage. Money slips out in ways you never see, and you leave real dollars on the table, year after year.
The opposite is just as real. When our clients commit to their Numbers Targets, we see steady, incremental improvements, and they add up to a healthier bottom line. You cannot improve what you do not measure, and it all starts with setting the goal posts: your KPIs, your goals, your budget.
My top tips for setting Numbers Targets
Get Numbers 101, Numbers Knowledge and Numbers Strategy sorted first. Targets sit on top of that foundation, not instead of it.
Then deep dive into your numbers. Understand what is really driving profit and cash before you set a figure.
Have your industry benchmarks handy as a guide. If you do not have them, the rule of thirds is a solid starting point.
Set a turnover goal and the financial KPIs that support it, such as gross profit, net profit and cost of sales.
Capture your results and use that data every month in a strategic way. A target you set once and never look at is not a target.
There is no successful business owner who does not know and use their numbers.
This is how you become data-driven
When you commit to Numbers Targets, you stop guessing and start leading. You become a data-driven business, and that shift is one of the clearest markers of the owners who go on to succeed.
If you are finding this step hard, or any of the steps before it, that is worth naming rather than pushing through alone. Bringing in the right help here tends to pay for itself. Done well, it pulls more time, money and freedom out of your business, which is the whole point.
Ready to set your goal posts?
Step 4 builds on the work you did in Step 3. If you have not read it yet, start with Numbers Strategy, then come back here. And if you want to see where your business stands across the whole picture, the Business Health Check and Cash Flow Reality Check is a good place to start.
